Driving
Driving is an integral part of life in America! It is a requirement of the program that you hold a drivers license (“P-plates” are okay). This is essential because many host families live in suburban areas where you will need you to drive your host family’s kids to school and to various activities.
Before traveling overseas, you should obtain an International Drivers Permit (IDP). An IDP is a special permit that allows motorists to drive internationally, without further tests, as long as their domestic license is valid. IDP’s are issued through State and Territory Motoring Clubs. In some states, you may need to get a local license; your community counselor will assist you with this.
Your host parents may allow you to use their car for childcare or personal purposes. It is important to remember that use of your host family’s car is a privilege.
Expect that your host parents may accompany you in the car until they are comfortable with your driving skills. This will be a chance for them to orient you to local roads, and check your driving ability.
Automobile insurances is your host parent’s responsibility. Make sure that you understand what cover you have, and how much money you will be liable for if you have an accident.
